Some of the books I have read recommend doing a quick boat check at every change of watch while on a passage. I think I will print this list out and add it in to the front of the log book:
- Check weather forecast – note current conditions and predictions in the log
- Check AIS and note any shipping in the area
- Check GPS/chart – course, speed, discuss any adjustments etc and note in logbook
- Check bilges and note any change
- Check hatches are closed
- Check seacocks and head
- Ensure gas is switched off
- Stow any loose equipment
- Check battery level and electronics – check navigation lights are working, fridge, etc
- Check engine area – belt tension, notice any smells or noises or anything unusual
- Check fuel and top up if necessary
- Look for chafe on lines and sails, coil and stow any stray lines
- Get binoculars and check rig
- Check steering/autohelm
Note anything of concern with a plan for monitoring and repairing if required
