On Passage Boat Checklist

Some of the books I have read recommend doing a quick boat check at every change of watch while on a passage. I think I will print this list out and add it in to the front of the log book:

  • Check weather forecast – note current conditions and predictions in the log
  • Check AIS and note any shipping in the area
  • Check GPS/chart – course, speed, discuss any adjustments etc and note in logbook
  • Check bilges and note any change
  • Check hatches are closed
  • Check seacocks and head
  • Ensure gas is switched off
  • Stow any loose equipment
  • Check battery level and electronics – check navigation lights are working, fridge, etc
  • Check engine area – belt tension, notice any smells or noises or anything unusual
  • Check fuel and top up if necessary
  • Look for chafe on lines and sails, coil and stow any stray lines
  • Get binoculars and check rig
  • Check steering/autohelm

Note anything of concern with a plan for monitoring and repairing if required
