I love to eat fish, and am more than happy to dangle a line over the side and wrestle with a fish, however I am not so fussed on the bit in between catching it and then having nice fillets frying in the pan! Luckily Andrew is a very keen fisherman, so I will leave the fishing gear fit- out to him! However here are some of the things I have come across which are very handy additions to have in the fishing tackle box:
- Decent boat rods
- Rod holders
- Tackle box with various hooks, line and sinkers
- Very sharp filleting knife
- Fish filleting bait board
- Bucket
- Measuring device (and copy of the fishing regulations)
- Soft Baits – these are great as they are biodegradable plastic and so they don’t go off and get all smelly like conventional bait. Berkley GEW-BR Gulp Earthworm, Brown, 4-Inch
- Net Frabill Folding Net with Telescoping Handle (18 X 16-Inch)
- Gaff – on the shopping list! Promar Kayaker Floating Telescopic Gaffs, 29-Inch to 46-Inch
- Fish flipper or damp towel to get them off the hook
- Catch bag – for when you are diving or free diving for shellfish or spearfishing Trident One Handed Opening Lobster and Game Bag Scuba Dive Diving Diver Gear Authorized Dealer Full Warranty
- Spear Gun – I bought one of these for Andrew for Christmas last year – it is small enough to fit in your catch bag and is really effective for catching big fish! (see below!) Cressi Sub 16 inch SL Star 40 Pneumatic Spear gun – Cressi Sub Spearguns
We will need to be careful when fishing around the Tropics. Reef fish can be very poisonous in these areas. Check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciguatera – it does not sound nice!
